Fruitcake: Haters gonna hate

Fruitcake: Haters gonna hate

Fruitcake goes back as far as the ancient Romans. Our modern Christmas fruitcake traces back to the 16th century. And it’s amazing that it has become such an enduring Christmas tradition, given how many people hate it!

Fruitcake is the butt of many jokes in popular culture. It’s mocked for being absurdly dense and heavy. It’s ridiculed for its unnaturally bright fruit and super sweet flavor. And that mockery has turned into open hostility in some cases. Since 1995, Manitou Springs, Colorado has been home to an annual Great Fruitcake Toss.

But fruitcake aversion is even older than you may think. Check out the video for some fun facts about the cake we love to hate!
