Gingerbread has been associated with Christmas for centuries. But the gingerbread we know today, in the form of cookies, houses, and the less common (but equally delicious) cake-like bread are newer variations on a theme. Earlier gingerbread recipes were more like confections, with a dense, sticky texture, and a much spicier flavor profile.
In this Christmas Past original infographic, we illustrate one gingerbread recipe taken from the 1673 book, Lady Barbara Fleming’s Manuscript Receipt Book (and those aren’t typos below; they’re the original 17th-century English spellings!).
